Cycling during the Holidays

How can I manage the stress of fertility treatments and the holiday season at the same time?

“It’s very natural to feel stressed when you’re going through fertility treatments, and the added pressure of the holidays can make it even more overwhelming. But there are 3 things you can do when considering holiday stress:

Number One:

Take breaks from the holiday “hustle and bustle”. It’s OKAY to say no to social events or even to delegate tasks to others. I would more than encourage you to take some time to relax and recharge if you are able.

Number Two:

Practice self-care! Make time for activities that nourish your body and your mind. It can be exercise, meditation, and especially with the holidays: spending time with your loved ones.

Number Three:

Seek some support. If you have a therapist, be sure to write a list of things you want to bring up, and having a support group can be really helpful to connect with others who are going through similar experiences. Generation Next Fertility has an ongoing support group that meets the first Thursday of each month. I would highly suggest you checking that out too!”

How do I talk to my family and friends about my fertility treatments?

“First off, let’s be clear, you don’t owe anyone an explanation. It’s your decision whether or not to tell family and friends about your fertility journey. If you do choose to share, be prepared for a range of reactions. Some people may be supportive and understanding, while others may not understand or may say something hurtful. Setting healthy boundaries and having open communication is the road to a mutual understanding.”

Dr. Luk, what if I don’t get pregnant but I already told my family about my journey?

“I know firsthand how difficult it can be to share your fertility journey with loved ones, and it can be especially disappointing if you don’t get pregnant despite your efforts. If you’ve already told your family about your fertility treatments, it’s important to remember that you are not alone, that it’s okay to take care of yourself, and that your family can be a tremendous support system at this time. They may not understand exactly what you’re going through, but they can still offer love and support. It’s important to be honest with them about your needs and to ask for help if you need it. Lean on your support system and know that there are many resources available to help you through this difficult time.”

The holiday season can be a challenging time for those going through fertility treatments, but with the right support and self-care, it’s possible to find joy and meaning despite the challenges. Remember to take care of yourself and reach out for support when you need it.
