What is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)?

  • Hormonal imbalance that causes enlarged ovaries and may lead to the development of cysts
  • PCOS may prevent an egg from developing properly or ovulating at the appropriate time
  • Affects one in ten women of childbearing age

What are the symptoms of PCOS?

  • Irregular menstrual cycles, including long or skipped cycles, which may lead to the development of ovarian cysts and ultimately, infertility
  • A condition called Hirsutism, in which too much hair grows around the face and chin
  • Thinning of hair on the head, acne, skin tags, darkening of the skin, and/or weight gain

How is PCOS treated?

  • At-home treatments include weight management for overweight or obese patients, use of hormonal birth control, or the use of other medications prescribed by a doctor
  • For infertility, IVF stimulation can be considered
  • Surgery can be performed to restore normal function of the ovaries
