National Infertility Awareness Week - an Interview with Dr. Luk

NIAW allows us to increase awareness about infertility, reduce stigma, and promote education. It’s important for people to know that they are not alone in their struggles and that there are resources available to help them. NIAW helps to create a community of support for individuals and couples on their fertility journey.

What do you think makes a successful doctor-patient relationship?

“Communication and trust are key. I really believe in taking the time to listen to my patients and understand their individual needs and concerns. It’s important for all patients to feel heard and supported throughout their journey.”

What advice would you give to someone who has been cycling for over a year?

“First and foremost, I want to acknowledge how challenging it can be to keep going after a year of cycling. It takes a lot of strength and perseverance to keep pushing forward, and I want you to know that you are not alone. My advice would be to continue to prioritize self-care and to seek support from loved ones and professionals. It’s also important to have open and honest conversations with your doctor about your goals and concerns, and to explore all of your options. Sometimes a change in approach can make all the difference, so don’t give up hope.”

What advice would you give to couples or individuals who are considering fertility treatments but are hesitant or unsure about the process?

“It’s understandable to feel hesitant or unsure about fertility treatments, but I want to reassure you that there is no shame in seeking help to build the family you want. My advice would be to start by doing your research and exploring all of your options. Schedule a consultation with a fertility specialist to get a better understanding of your unique situation and what treatment options may be best for you. Remember to take things one step at a time and to prioritize self-care and emotional support throughout the process. And most importantly, know that you are not alone – there is a whole community of individuals and families who have gone through this journey and are here to support you.”

How do you approach the emotional and psychological aspects of infertility, and do you recommend any support resources for patients and couples?

“At Generation Next Fertility, we understand that dealing with infertility can be emotionally and psychologically taxing. We approach these aspects of infertility with great sensitivity and empathy. We acknowledge that each person’s experience is unique, and we tailor our approach accordingly.

We also recognize that support from others who have gone through similar experiences can be incredibly helpful. That’s why we recommend our patients consider joining support groups such as “Candid Conversations.” Candid Conversations is a peer-to-peer support group for fertility-related candid conversations. The group meets on the first Thursday of every month and provides a safe space for kindness and support. We encourage our patients to attend and connect with others who can relate to their experiences. We believe that emotional and psychological support, in addition to medical treatment, is essential for successful outcomes in fertility treatments.”

What do you hope to see in the future of fertility medicine, and how do you envision your role in shaping that future?

“I’m constantly inspired by the advancements in technology and research in our field. I started Generation Next Fertility because I believe in individualized and personalized treatments that holistically view patients’ unique needs and circumstances. I would love for this to be the standard across the entire fertility industry one day as I believe that education, advocacy, and collaboration are key.”
